Nava, too, likes mirrored finishes - on frames, tables, even nightstands - because "they can really go either way," he said. Use florals with caution. When her clients argue against florals, "they're imagining that old-fashioned Laura Ashley thing," Davis said.
New contemporary floral prints can be appealing in small doses. Nava likes to use a touch of floral, but he doesn't do it with fabrics; he'll use actual flowers. A small vase of hydrangeas, he said, can make the bedroom "a little warmer, more lived-in, cozier," and both men and women can appreciate a flower arrangement.
Don't overdo the pillows. Decorative pillows are an excellent way to add color and texture to a bed, but a pile of them can make a room look feminine in a hurry. Thomas loves to use pillows - but if she gets some pushback from the man, she'll tone it down and stick with a neat line of square Euro pillows. Nava, meanwhile, likes to "add a bit of fun" with pillows. He'll throw in a leather or fur-covered pillow that can even add a hint of masculinity.
Be willing to compromise. Above all, make it a couple's retreat. When her clients have children, Davis recommends they keep photos of the kids out of the master bedroom. To add a personal touch, she'll often display wedding photos usually printed in black and white so they won't look dated and photos of the couple together from, say, an unforgettable vacation. In her own bedroom, Davis is planning to gather some old love letters from her husband and display them in a glass box.
