Residents are provided with broad surgical exposure, structured didactics and research opportunities. Over time, they gain progressive independence and surgical confidence. Our curriculum is taught by experienced faculties, and the program provides access to advanced technology, innovative surgical practices and state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories.
Our comprehensive training program comprises of the core curriculum, grand rounds, numerous orthopedic conferences, symposia, the anatomy lab, the surgical skills lab and exposure to various surgical specialties. We provide an educational environment that is student centered, in which residents earn graduated responsibility. Our residency training is success based and supportive, led by nationally renowned specialists.
The teaching program of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery comprises faculty members who are fellowship trained in all of the orthopedic subspecialties. The department performs over 7, surgical procedures per year, providing residents with extensive surgical training in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Montefiore, in collaboration with our Albert Einstein College of Medicine, provides residents with various research opportunities.
The department is engaged in a wide array of clinical research, which is routinely presented at both national and international venues. At the end of their fourth year, orthopedic surgery residents are expected to develop a research project that culminates in a presentation to the faculty.
In addition, residents often submit their research for presentation at national conferences. Our residents are a diverse group of professionals who are dedicated to providing high-quality healthcare to underserved populations.
A close-knit group, residents share both work and life experiences and enjoy all that New York City has to offer. Just a short subway ride away are the world-famous museums and performing arts centers of Manhattan. Residents typically live in hospital housing or close by in Riverdale, lower Westchester or Manhattan. Applicants selected for interview will be offered one of two available interview days, one in December and one in January.
The visit extends for the majority of the day and consists of multiple interviews, each involving surgeons. Additionally, a tour of the facilities and a brief informational session is provided. Applicants selected for interview will be provided with the opportunity to informally meet and interact with representatives from the residency the evening prior to their scheduled visit.
This social event is designed to allow prospective residents the chance to meet current residents, ask questions, learn about the program and glean a bit of insight into what residency at Montefiore entails. Over applications are reviewed each year and approximately 60 candidates are extended an interview.
Resident selection is based upon merit as judged by academic achievement, letters of support, professionalism, communication skills, research participation and personal characteristics including motivation and integrity. The Department of Orthopedic Surgery Bioengineering Laboratory is fully equipped and located on the Einstein campus for basic science projects.
